The operation may address a tendon, instability or another specific problem. The diagnosis and planned work should be clear before surgery. Different repairs need different protection and rehabilitation.
Care and next steps
Ask why arthroscopy is recommended, what alternatives exist and what improvement is realistic. The rehabilitation programme should reflect the procedure performed. Do not combine online shoulder exercises with a postoperative programme without checking whether they are allowed.
Prepare for your consultation
Discuss your dominant arm, dressing, bathing, sleep and work tasks. Arrange help if sling use will make these difficult. Ask when the sling can be removed, which movements are permitted and who will supervise progression. Keep a copy of the operation note for the physiotherapist. If an unexpected problem develops, use the contact instructions rather than waiting for the next routine session.
Plan around what your arm must do
Write down whether your work requires typing, lifting, driving or overhead reaching. Ask how a sling and any repair protection will affect dressing and sleep. Arrange help for tasks that normally need both hands. A small incision does not describe the demands of tendon healing.
Make the rehabilitation handover clear
Use these questions to make the consultation specific to your situation.
- What was repaired, if anything?
- Which movements are permitted now, and who progresses them?
- What is the plan for work involving lifting or overhead tasks?
