Understanding the problem
Walking around the home is different from prolonged standing, climbing repeatedly or reacting quickly behind the wheel. Progress should consider comfort, movement, strength and safety. The activity you most want to resume deserves a specific discussion.
Care and next steps
Follow the surgical team's guidance on permitted activity and build up gradually. Ask before returning to high-impact sport. Driving also requires consideration of medicines and the ability to control the vehicle safely; this article cannot provide personal clearance.
Prepare for your consultation
Make a list of your work tasks rather than relying only on your job title. Include travel to work, lifting, stairs and standing time. For driving, explain which knee was operated on and the vehicle type. Ask for a staged plan with review points and any documentation needed by your employer. Confirm advice with your treating team before making irreversible travel or event bookings.
Describe the activity rather than asking about normal life
Floor sitting, kneeling for prayer, using a squat toilet, carrying shopping and climbing a bus step involve different demands. Ask about the tasks that matter to you individually. A general statement that recovery is going well does not clear every activity.
Make a practical activity list
Use these questions to make the consultation specific to your situation.
- Which activity is my immediate priority?
- Can it be adapted with a chair, rail or different route?
- What assessment will determine when I can progress?
Common questions
Can I use another patient's return-to-work date as my target?
It can be a conversation starter, but your plan should reflect your recovery and actual work demands.
